Hazardous Waste Policy and Procedures

While working with a new customer who has experience handling hazardous waste, many issues came up that need to be addressed. Here's a check list to help you evaluate your policy:

  1. How hazardous materials are purchased
  2. Storing them safely and correctly
  3. Having the correct containers for them
  4. Having the correct storage cabinets
  5. Keeping the waste streams separate
  6. Having MSDS sheets on file
  7. Doing the correct testing
  8. Having appropriate venting
  9. Having the local fire department approvals
  10. Having a policy on handling the products
  11. Having the correct procedures for handling the waste
  12. Using correct chain of custody procedures

As you can see, there are many aspects to hazardous waste that need to be addressed. A mistake in this area can be very costly, so it's important to get it right.

Disposing of Mercury Lamps

Proper disposal of mercury lamps is important. If you are tossing a mercury lamp in the garbage and an EPA inspector happens to be in the neighborhood, you may be liable for hefty fines. So it's important to take some time and initiate a proper disposal plan.

Here are some things to think about when making your plan.
  • How many bulbs you throw away every month or year.
  • Where bulbs should go to remain in compliance.
  • Who will be responsible for disposal.
  • How you will educate your staff about your procedures.
It's a New Year, so take time to make sure you're doing the right thing in the eyes of the law and the environment.
